Included with your family membership, the program introduces kids to the many facets of earth’s geology and composition with science and fun, and hands on projects. Occasionally there will be Field Trips designed especially for the Kids. The Cobb County Gem & Mineral Society’s Junior Rockhound program is suitable for ages 8 and up, but parental attendance is required. Oh…and be sure to visit the Juniors fence line rock pile (or donate some yourself)!
Junior Rockhounds, when at the club, will usually be scheduled the last Saturday of the month. Special events, like field trips that are geared to Juniors, will be when scheduled.
Also at this meeting, we’ll be continuing work on the Rock and Mineral badge and also the Earth Processes badge that we began in June and July and will really focus on crystal shapes in minerals and starting our mineral collection.
Please bring your field journals, your rock collection carton (with your rocks), and your glue guns. If you were at Frank’s Farm in August, which most of you were, please be sure to have written up your field trip notes about the trip (date, place, what you thought, what you brought, how successful you were, any special little stories that happened) along with one of your specimens you dug up added to your rock collection (chert is a sedimentary rock that contains minerals like quartz and jasper).
Last Time at Jr. Rockhounds
In January we spent an exciting day at the Tellus Science Museum. We spent the day doing one of Tellus’ famous scavenger hunts. That required us to comb through the entire museum look for anwers to the fun and educational questions that made up the scavenger hunt. It was a great day.
