Summerville Field Trip
April 21, 2013

It was a beautiful day to collect crazy lace agate at the Patty Construction site in Summerville Georgia. Over 45 members showed up to collect great specimens of crazy lace agate, drusy quartz and oolitic chert. We all agreed that it was one of the best digs for beautiful crazy lace agate, everyone seemed to find high quality pieces.

It was really fun to see two and three generations of families collecting together. We had members who lived just a few miles from the site to one member who drove from Americus, Georgia to attend the dig. Trip Leader Wes Manley had both specimens of what participants could collect as well as cabochons that he had made from the Summerville material available when he signed people in. Children who attended were also lucky to receive a geode from Wes that he and his family had collected the day before in Tennessee. Quite a thrill!

Bob Hohn and Dion Stewart, also field trip team members, were there to help Wes show new members where to find materials and see the potential for jewelry making.

Some participants found inventive ways to clean materials in puddles of water to see how good the lacey design was in the dusty agate. Most rocks were keepers as the materials seemed especially good this trip! There were great pieces of drusy quartz and crystals too. We all left the site happily taking buckets of great material home!

These reports chronicle the details of the fun and adventure of seeking and finding your own rocks, minerals or fossils. Frequently, these trips are repeated. This makes this page a good reference site for future trips. Collecting location specifics won't be included in the report as they generally require special permission to collect. It's important that we protect the privacy of our site owners to avoid unwanted rockhounds searching on their property.
