Banded Jasper Geodes
October 28, 2017

It was a “rain or shine” event, and unfortunately the 41 hardy collectors from six different states had to endure temperatures in the 50’s with a light driving rain from winds that were 20+ mph. Despite the conditions they “loved it,” some saying it was the best collecting they had ever seen with two new fields bulldozed open.

The rain washed the samples clean so spotting good material was easy, and it was everywhere. A few slogged through the mud of the freshly cut road to the back field and were rewarded with banded-jasper geodes. Frank and Ray had pitched large canopies the day before and we all huddled there to look at each other’s findings and exchange collecting tales, wishing we had hot chocolate rather than the ice water that was available with all the edible goodies that we, as host club brought to the dig. Frank was a great host as always, driving people all over the place, and every time we come he has opened a new field for collecting. This time the red-black mottled jasper was superb and reds dominated most of the pieces collected. The material was so plentiful that one group from Alabama nearly filled up the back of their pick-up truck.

These reports chronicle the details of the fun and adventure of seeking and finding your own rocks, minerals or fossils. Frequently, these trips are repeated. This makes this page a good reference site for future trips. Collecting location specifics won't be included in the report as they generally require special permission to collect. It's important that we protect the privacy of our site owners to avoid unwanted rockhounds searching on their property.
